In an ongoing effort to combat the spread of Mpox, the Public Health Office in Athi River, in collaboration with the Red Cross and other partners, has successfully sensitized over 2,000 individuals across various community institutions. The outreach program, which took place over the past week, covered five churches and one children's home, reaching 508 men, 872 women, and 724 children.n.
Among the institutions visited were Living Prophetic Ministry Church, KMC PAG Church, Athi River PAG Church, Upendo Worship Center, Church of God Athi River, and Bondeni Children’s Home.
Key topics included the origins of Mpox, signs and symptoms, and adherence to safety practices to prevent the spread of the disease. During the sessions, it became evident that many in the community had not heard of Mpox before, indicating a significant gap in awareness.

"We realized that many in the community were hearing about Mpox for the first time," said Mr. Mulinge, the Coordinator of Public Health in Athi River. "Our goal is to ensure that everyone is well-informed about the disease and how to prevent its spread."
Despite the success, the team faced some challenges, particularly with transportation, which caused delays in reaching designated areas. Mr. Mulinge emphasized that the team remains committed to expanding their efforts, saying, "We are working with various partners to address these logistical issues and reach even more people."
In response to the education provided, local churches in Athi River have requested masks and sanitizers, should the situation worsen. This feedback highlights the community’s growing concern and willingness to engage in preventive practices.
