Talented Sultana Actress Winnie Ndubi Bwire Dies After Brave Battle with Cancer

Talented actress Winnie Ndubi Bwire, known for her role as ‘Dida’ in Sultana, has passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. Her family announced her death on September 5, 2024, revealing she succumbed to the disease while receiving treatment in Turkey.

In their statement, Bwire’s family expressed their sorrow and acceptance of God's will: “With heavy hearts, we announce that Winfred Bwire Ndubi lost her battle with cancer on September 5, 2024, while undergoing treatment in Turkey. We are grateful for the overwhelming support, prayers, and generous donations during her treatment. Further details will be shared in due course.”

Bwire’s passing follows a recent public appeal for financial support to cover the cost of her treatment. She had sought Sh5 million to fund her medical expenses, accommodation, and meals during her stay abroad.

In her final video, shared on August 14, Bwire spoke about her treatment, revealing the severe side effects she faced: “You wouldn’t believe it, but the medication has over 41 side effects, and you never know which one will hit you. It changes constantly.” She mentioned that the intensity of the side effects led her doctors to advise stopping the medication.

Despite securing visas for her treatment in Turkey, Bwire faced financial difficulties that delayed her care. In her emotional appeal, she said: “If you can support me, I have nothing to give in return, but you will save my life. I wanted this video to be hopeful, not emotional.” She expressed frustration with the high cost of healthcare and the struggle to make progress: “Every time I feel like I’ve taken ten steps forward, it’s like I’m being dragged back eight steps. Thank you so much for praying for me.”

Diagnosed in 2022 with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a rare breast cancer involving abnormal cells in the milk ducts, Bwire had been documenting her treatment journey on social media.
