Mathira Residents Push to Recall MP Eric Wamumbi Over 'Betrayal' of Deputy President Gachagua
Mathira residents initiate a recall drive against MP Eric Wamumbi over his vote against DP Gachagua. Discover why this political dispute is shaking the region.
In Mathira constituency, Kenya, a group of residents has initiated a signature collection drive to recall their Member of Parliament, Eric Wamumbi. This move, led by local community figure Samuel Ngari, follows a series of political disagreements between Wamumbi and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who once actively supported Wamumbi’s parliamentary bid. However, after Wamumbi voted in favor of Gachagua's impeachment, many Mathira residents perceived this as a betrayal, especially since Gachagua is considered an influential local leader in the region.
The group aims to collect at least 31,000 signatures, or 30% of the constituency’s registered voters, to meet the legal threshold for a recall process. The push for recall is also fueled by local frustration over perceived neglect of constituent interests and alignment with what some locals see as divisive political maneuvers. The campaign is expected to gain momentum during the December holiday season when more residents are available to support the cause.
Despite this effort, Wamumbi has dismissed the signature drive, describing it as politically motivated and a reaction to his fallout with Gachagua. This unfolding scenario highlights ongoing political tensions within Kenya's ruling coalition and the public’s increasing demand for accountability from their elected leaders.
