Samburu Ex-Governor Moses Lenolkulal Convicted in Sh84 Million Bribery Case

Former Samburu Governor Moses Lenolkulal has been found guilty of receiving Sh84 million in bribes for the supply of petroleum products to the county government during his tenure. Trial Magistrate Thomas Nzyoki highlighted that Lenolkulal and his proxy, Hesbon Ndathi, were the primary beneficiaries of the funds. The court cited over 200 payment vouchers and LPOs as evidence of Lenolkulal's direct transactions with the county.

Magistrate Nzyoki criticized Lenolkulal for acting in conflict of interest and compromising his integrity by using his company, Oryx Service Station, for the transactions. The county secretary, also implicated, was found to have approved payments despite knowing about Lenolkulal's ownership of Oryx. The court dismissed a lease agreement presented by Lenolkulal and Ndathi as a sham meant to disguise their actions.

The case, significant as the first corruption case involving a governor to reach a conclusion, underscores the ongoing fight against corruption in Kenya. The EACC has recovered the misappropriated funds in a separate civil suit. The convicted individuals, including Stephen Siringa, Daniel Nakuo, and others, will face sentencing on Thursday.
