Kufa Dereva, Kufa Makanga: Morara Kebaso Charged with Incitement After Violent Bomas of Kenya Impeachment Forum

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has charged lawyer Morara Kebaso with making statements that incited public disorder at the Bomas of Kenya on Friday during a public forum aimed at impeaching Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

According to the charge document reviewed by Nairobileo.co.ke on Tuesday, October 8, Kebaso is alleged to have caused a disturbance that could potentially lead to a breach of peace.

The DCI claims that Kebaso's utterance of "Kufa dereva, kufa makanga" provoked the crowd into violence at the Bomas of Kenya.

"On October 4, 2024, at Bomas of Kenya in Lang'ata Sub-county, Nairobi County, during a public forum concerning the impeachment of Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, together with others not before the Court, Kebaso allegedly created a disturbance likely to breach the peace by saying 'kufa dereva, kufa makanga,' which caused the public to react aggressively," the charge sheet states.

Previously, Kebaso mentioned that he had been detained in relation to the violent event at the Bomas of Kenya.

"I have been arrested concerning what took place at Bomas. Can you believe that? Does it even make any sense?" he questioned.

As he attempted to speak to the audience, Kebaso was physically assaulted at the Bomas of Kenya.

Shortly after his arrival, he was seen asking for the microphone when chaos erupted as unknown assailants started throwing chairs at him.

Despite attempts to control the situation, it deteriorated, forcing Kebaso to escape for his safety amid the raucous crowd and ensuing violence.

Kebaso later recounted his initial denial of entry and being denied the microphone, suggesting that the attack was premeditated.

"It seems there were plans made beforehand for me to be attacked. The public wanted to hear me speak, but the emcee, TJ Kajwang', did not support my speaking. I was cornered, my bodyguard was injured, and I was struck by over 30 metal chairs.

"Now, I am reflecting on where I went wrong and I think there were enough warning signs that I failed to recognize. We stumble, we rise, we learn," he added.
