An 18-year-old pregnant girl from Mbiuni, Mwala Subcounty, is recovering at Machakos Level 5 Hospital after a brutal machete attack by her 22-year-old boyfriend. The suspect remains at large, and authorities are investigating the incident, which has raised concerns about rising gender-based violence in the region.
An 18-year-old girl from Mbiuni Mwala Subcounty is receiving treatment at Machakos Level 5 Hospital after suffering a violent attack allegedly perpetrated by her 22-year-old boyfriend, Brian Wait, with whom she has been in a relationship for two years. Ndanu, who is 23 weeks pregnant, was assaulted with a machete, leading to severe lacerations on her neck and a fractured arm.
The incident took place following what seemed to be an ordinary day.
According to Ndanu, the couple shared a lunch together before Waita left, saying he was going to fetch a donkey for the market. When he returned with the donkey, he started washing his shirt while Ndanu rested.
Shortly after, she found herself on floor, bleeding profusely from a brutal slash to her neck and arm.
In disbelief, she crawled to her bed and called a neighbor for help after her boyfriend escaped, leaving her trapped inside the house.
A local man, in a brave effort to assist, managed to climb through the roof and opened the door for her.
When police arrived, Ndanu had already been taken to Masii Level 3 Hospital for initial care before being moved to Machakos Level 5 Hospital for further treatment.
"I still can’t wrap my head around the fact that my husband, who has always been kind and supportive, could do this to me," Ndanu expressed, her voice filled with sorrow, noting that although they have no children, she is expecting their first.
Juliana Mwendwa, the Nursing Service Manager at Machakos Level 5, reported that Ndanu had sustained critical injuries, including deep cuts on her neck and arm.
"She was unconscious upon arrival, but she is now stable and recovering in the orthopedic ward," Mwendwa stated. She also raised concerns about the increasing incidents of gender-based violence in the area, calling on the community to take action against this issue.
Mwala OCPD Muthoni Wahome confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and authorities are actively searching for the suspect, who has remained at large since the assault.
