Warning: Machakos County Launches Crackdown on Bhang Dealers
Machakos County is intensifying efforts to combat drug abuse, particularly bhang, following alarming increases in youth suicides and family breakdowns. County Commissioner Josephine Ouko warns drug dealers that law enforcement will be more vigilant.
The police in Machakos County have launched a major crackdown on people selling abusive substances, especially bhang (cannabis sativa). County Commissioner Josephine Ouko has raised the alarm over the growing use of bhang, which she says is destroying the lives of young people and tearing families apart.
“Look at what these drugs have done to our young generation, and even the older ones,” Ouko said. “Families have broken because of cannabis sativa, children have dropped out of school, and we are seeing an increase in suicides in Machakos because of this drug.”
The crackdown was announced shortly after police in Migwani, Machakos, seized 200kg of bhang worth Ksh. 6.5 million. The bhang was being transported in a small vehicle from Migori to Machakos.

Ouko warned drug dealers that the county security team is stepping up its efforts to stop the illegal drug trade. “I am putting a warning to anyone involved in this business—we are coming for you. From now on, we have agreed as a county security team to put dogs on the highway to help in the fight against bhang.”
She also urged traffic officers to be more vigilant, especially with vehicles that are highly tinted. “We are asking traffic officers to check vehicles with illegal tints. Such tints make it easier for drugs to be transported undetected, and we need to put an end to that.”
